The Pelèr and the Ora: the Winds of Campione del Garda

Lake Garda's thermal cycle guarantees regular wind. In the morning the Pelèr blows from the north (15-27 knots), in the afternoon the Ora from the south (10-20 knots).

Pelèr

North Wind · 02:00-12:00 · 15-27 knots

Morning wind from the mountains. More developed waves, ideal for experienced riders.

Ora

South Wind · 12:00-Sunset · 10-20 knots

Afternoon wind that travels up the lake. The lake is generally calm, perfect for beginners.

Best season: from April to October, peaking between June and September when the Pelèr and Ora blow most regularly and strongly.

Understanding the Garda Wind

Thermal Winds

The Pelèr and the Ora are thermal winds, generated by the difference in temperature and pressure between the mountains to the north and the plain to the south of the lake.

The Influence of Topography

Lake Garda is surrounded by mountains in the north and a vast flat area to the south. This conformation creates a natural funnel effect that channels and accelerates the wind.

Venturi Effect in Campione

Campione del Garda lies at the narrowest point of the lake's natural funnel. The Pelèr, arriving from the north, accelerates as it passes between the mountains, reaching its maximum intensity here. For the Ora the opposite happens: it is weaker in Campione and stronger in Riva/Torbole.

Winter

In winter the snow-covered mountains to the north create cold air that descends towards the warmer plain to the south, generating intense Pelèr winds of over 20 knots.

Summer

In summer the mountains warm up earlier, creating a draw of air from the plain towards the north, giving rise to the afternoon Ora.

Pressure Differential

The key to forecasting the wind is the pressure difference between Bolzano and Brescia. When this difference exceeds a certain threshold, wind is guaranteed.
