The Village
An Italian fjord on Lake Garda
The Place
Campione del Garda is a hamlet of the municipality of Tremosine sul Garda, the only one to face directly onto the waters of the lake. The village rises on a narrow strip of land at the mouth of the San Michele stream, surrounded by rock walls that climb vertically to over 400 metres.
This distinctive geographical setting gives Campione a unique, almost Nordic appearance, often compared to a small fjord nestled in Lake Garda. For centuries the village remained isolated, reachable only by lake, a feature that has preserved its identity and authentic charm.
Today Campione del Garda lies within the Parco Alto Garda Bresciano and is an ideal destination for those seeking nature, sport, tranquillity and a deep connection with the history of the area.
History
Campione has been inhabited since ancient times. The history of the village is also linked to Ercolano, bishop of Brescia, who took refuge here in the 6th century to live as a hermit.
Over the centuries the village experienced phases of growth and decline. From the 16th century it became home to paper mills, forges and mills that harnessed the falling water of the San Michele stream. In 1700 the Archetti family acquired the workshops and opened a new spinning mill, building Villa Archetti and a small church dedicated to Sant'Ercolano.
In 1896 Giangiacomo Feltrinelli built a cotton mill and a workers' village that included a church, a theatre and a boarding house. The cotton mill closed in 1981 and since then Campione has been living a new phase thanks to tourism redevelopment.
